Once upon a time there lived a little fairy named Kimberly. She lived alone in a house made of golden straw. She did not much care for visitors; especially other fairies. You see, Kimberly felt misunderstood and she had long given up the quest of trying to help others understand her. "Why bother when I'm content by myself and I never have to explain anything to myself for it all makes sense to me?" Yes, Kimberly was an odd one and she liked it that way.
One morning she was grooming herself in her favorite tulip when a fairy she had never seen before flew by. She stared with mild interest at the purple wings, rainbow-colored body and spiky hair. The fairy didn't notice her at all; she just flew on by. Kimberly shrugged her shoulders and went back to grooming herself.
That was the beginning of this strange little fairy's daily trek past Kimberly's house. Each morning she would fly past Kimberly, never once noticing her. Kimberly, not one for making chit chat, wanted to know where this peculiar fairy went every morning, but didn't want it to turn into a big discussion. "Best to leave well enough alone," she thought to herself.
Months went by and still the fairy traveled by every morning, never once looking around at the scenery she would pass. Meanwhile, Kimberly had grown rather lonely in her house made of golden straw. Of course, she would never admit that to anyone, hardly even to herself. She started imagining where this fairy went every day and why. Maybe she was a circus fairy (she certainly looked like one), so every day she would travel to the circus. Or maybe she had two families to tend to; one on this side of the forest and one on the other. Or maybe she simply enjoys driving her mad (though that one resonated the most, it didn't account for the fact that she never once noticed Kimberly).
She was too stubborn to follow the weird fairy nor did she believe it was truly worth her time. Years had passed now and Kimberly found herself having a harder and harder time moving around her home. She also found herself yearning more and more for companionship. "All these years and not one visitor (if you don't count that annoying fairy overhead) and you'd think I'd be content with that. It's what I always wanted, wasn't it? No one to have to bother with; no one to have to explain myself to." She was beginning to think that having someone to "bother" with had some merit after all. "I guess I could always invite that old fairy in for tea," she declared begrudgingly.
The next morning she sat in her favorite tulip, awaiting the rainbow-colored fairy. Sure enough, she came buzzing along as usual. With her heart pounding, Kimberly waved a delicate hand and meekly called out, "Hello there. My name's Kimberly, what's your name?" The fairy turned towards her in shock, her spiky hair standing straight up. "What is the meaning of this?" she sputtered in disbelief. "The meaning of what?" Kimberly asked, thoroughly confused at her rudeness. "The meaning of there being a break in my routine. How dare you break it without permission!" the fairy yelled indignantly, flying away in a huff.
Totally mystified, Kimberly lived the rest of her days alone. Still, she continued watching the strange fairy fly overhead every morning until she couldn't any longer.
