The Sticks of Truth
A wise man was once staying with his wealthy friend. This wealthy friend held a big banquet in honor of the wise man.
At the end of the dinner, the host noticed that a golden spoon had been stolen. To help discover who it was, the wise man asked everybody. Still, he couldn’t determine the thief’s identity.
After a moment of insight, the wise man went into the yard for a few minutes. When he returned, the wise man gave a stick to every guest.
He said to them:
“We will know tomorrow morning who has stolen the golden spoon because the thief’s spoon would grow two inches overnight.
The next day the guests returned. He examined the sticks. Then he announced that the man with the shortest stick was guilty.
After some questioning, the man with the shortest stick admitted that he stole the spoon.
Later, the wise man shared that the man with the shortest stick was the thief because the thief thought his stick would grow two inches and therefore he cut two inches off of his own.
